Back To Black (Lo55)

A journey from London to Kingston via the streets of New York. ‘Back to Black’ brings together the celestial jazz of Andy Bey, the disenfranchised soul of The Lost Generation and pioneering dub from the cloudy studio of King Tubby.

Originally released as an accompaniment to The “Back to Black - Art, Cinema and Racial Imaginary” exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery all the way back in 2005. Full of classics and lesser known gems, for the majority of these tracks this was the first time they had been made available since their original releases.

This album was compiled to mirror the purpose of the exhibition. To create a showcase of wonderful pieces of work that span disciplines, cultures and emotions, connected by the black political consciousness of the 1960’s and 70’s.
